I’m a teacher at a Title I school. The school I work at is 40% ELL and reflects all racial groups. We just won an award for being the fifth highest performing school for our social economic group in our state for ten years running. The teachers and most kids work hard. Still, sometimes I think teachers have a front row view to the decline of civilization. It doesn’t seem to matter what race the children come from, the thug culture is there. I really see it with adolescent boys. Lately we are even seeing it in kindergarten.

I agree thug culture is ruining the fabric of this nation. When the new national heroes are thugs pimps and drug dealers, everyone’s in trouble. But actual pimps drug dealers and thugs don’t advertise, don’t ask to be emulated. Like the gansters of old they try their best to fly under the radar. It’s Madison avenue that’s taken them mainstream.

I call it the doberman effect- if you have ten dobies coming at you- and you KNOW three of them will be great pets but the other seven want to tear you to pieces- and you have a pistol what are you going to do? Let them get to you and hope it’s one of the three or fire on them because of the other seven? can you blame them?! That’s not the issue my article raises. Nerd vs. Jock is normal. Nerd vs. Race isn’t. A young black man shouldn’t feel ostracized from his race for attending school, making good grades, or wearing a suit & tie.
